Custom Steel Stairs Engineered by Leander Metal Gates

Our team provides stair layout, landing design and powder-coat finishing for residential and commercial buildings. The business has run for 14 years, carries a 2-year workmanship warranty and has finished over 1,127 projects, from a short garden stair to a 300 ft retail back lot with a service stair.

From measuring the rise to bolting on the final tread, our team handles each staircase. Serving Leander and neighboring Georgetown, Round Rock and Cedar Park, a stair is handled as structure first and as a design feature after that.

Call for a free estimate: we measure the rise, check the landing and quote a price per staircase before any steel is ordered.

Getting a Staircase Into the House

The hard part of many stairs is not building them but delivering them. A spiral that stands 11 ft in The Hills is too big to carry through a door in one piece, so we build it in sections, carry them in and assemble them with bolts on site. That keeps welding and sparks out of the finished home, and it means a spiral for a roof deck in Lakeway or West Lake Hills arrives clean and is finished before it is lifted.

Before anything is ordered in Volente or Lakeway we walk the route from the driveway to the stair location, measuring every turn, door and landing the pieces will pass through. A tight hallway in Cedar Park or Georgetown can decide the shape of the stair before the design does, and a hillside lot in The Hills can decide where the footing goes.

The finish for a Steiner Ranch stair is applied before assembly in the shop: blast, zinc primer, then polyester powder cured in the oven, with touch-up kits left on site for later scratches. Scratches from carrying the pieces in are then touched up after the bolts are tight.

Vivian's roof deck in the Flintrock neighborhood of The Hills, a hillside address, had no room for a straight run of stairs. We built a steel spiral with oak treads, 5 ft in diameter, to climb an 11 ft rise, bolted it together on site and sized the landing so chairs could be carried up. The job was an estimated $3,700 to $5,500 and took an estimated 2 to 3 days.

Stair Code, Headroom and Engineering Risks

A stair is a structural job, and the risks sit in the numbers: how deep the tread is, how high the guard stands, how much headroom the opening leaves and whether the landing is large enough to turn on. We draw these on the plan, and a stair guard along the open side is priced at an estimated $66 to $134 per linear foot in Round Rock and Steiner Ranch alike. We confirm the stair code, the headroom and any engineering stamp with the city before steel is cut.

Leander sits in both Williamson and Travis Counties, so the side of the county line can change who reviews a stair. An exterior stair near a creek or a lot line in Georgetown or Round Rock may also need review, and we ask the city instead of guessing.

Stair Materials and Shapes Compared

A spiral, estimated at $1,400 to $5,900 per staircase, uses the least floor space and suits a roof deck or a loft, while a straight stringer stair is easier to climb with a load. The table compares them, and the treads can be oak for warmth or powder-coated steel for an outdoor stair that sees rain.

Every stair in Cedar Park or Sunset Valley needs a guard at its edge, and our iron railings are drawn together with the stair so the two read as one piece. For a deck that sits above a drop, see iron balconies.

The diameter, the rise and the tread material move the price more than anything else, and a hand-forged feature stair adds days at an estimated $86 to $129 per linear foot of guard. A short spiral with powder-coated steel treads lands near the bottom of the estimated $1,400 to $5,900 range, and a tall spiral with oak treads and a large landing lands near the top. Treat these as Leander estimates, subject to change with the rise, the access and the finish. Once the stair is measured on site, your quote states the final price and the install schedule in writing.

Towns We Serve for Staircase Work

We build stairs across a 35-mile radius, with most of the work in Cedar Park, Georgetown and Round Rock. Because most Leander homes are recent, an exterior stair here is usually a new feature for a deck or a patio. The Hills, Lakeway and West Lake Hills homes often have roof decks and hillside patios that need stairs built to the slope. See the service area page for the other towns on our route.

Why Homeowners Choose Us for Stairs

We bolt each stair together on site in Cedar Park and Volente, so a spiral that cannot be carried whole still arrives straight. After 1,127 projects over 14 years, we know where a landing is too small and a rise is too tall. The workmanship warranty runs 2 years on welds and plumb.

How long does it take to install a staircase?

A spiral typically takes an estimated 1 to 4 days on site, and Vivian's roof deck stair in The Hills took 2 to 3.

How wide is a spiral stair?

The one we built in The Hills was 5 ft in diameter, and the diameter is set to your room and your code.

Do I need an engineer or a permit?

Often yes for a stair, and we confirm it with the city before the drawing is signed.

We build it in sections and bolt it together on site, so it fits through the door.

The order of work

Four Steps From a Bare Wall to Finished Ironwork

  1. Walk the job

We tape the opening, check the wall or slab and read the town rules before anyone prices steel.

  2. Approve the drawing

You sign one scaled sheet listing size, coating and spacing, and that sheet doubles as your review board packet.

  3. Weld and coat

Each piece is welded in the shop and coated before delivery, so no grinding or spray paint happens at your home.

  4. Set it and prove it

Anchors go in, the piece is fixed in place, and we check plumb and spacing with you standing there.
